INTIX’s Mission Possible

The International Ticketing Association’s 33rd Annual Conference & Exhibition, MISSION POSSIBLE:  Resources; Results; Returns, was held in San Antonio, Texas January 17-19, 2012. The annual INTIX conference is the premier event for entertainment ticketing professionals and offers excellent educational and networking opportunities. There were over 800 conference participants from around the world with the exhibition featuring the latest in products and services specifically for the ticketing industry.
Steered by Conference Committee Chair, Aren Murray, Assistant Director MSC at Texas A&M University, this 3-day event featured 24 educational sessions, 2 keynotes, and 8 breakout sessions by type of organization.

Conference programming was based on learning tracks and educational sessions developed by entertainment ticketing professionals. A survey revealed key learning tracks including Revenue Generation, Organizational Changes & Staffing, Technology, Resource Optimization and Industry Trends. Some of the most popular sessions were Social Media Implementation for Ticketing – What’s working; The Operational Side of Dynamic Pricing; Facebook Ticketing; Using Social Media to Literally increase the Bottom Line; ARGHHH!!! The Opening Keynote entitled The Future of Ticketing Technology: Visions of Tomorrow featured panellists Dave Butler, CEO, Paciolan; Neal Gunn, VP Sales and Marketing, Outbox Enterprises; Kevin Kimsa, CEO, AudienceView Ticketing; Jeff Kline, President, Veritix; Jack Rubin, President, Tessitura Network, Inc.; Jared Smith, COO North America, Ticketmaster; and John Walker, President & CEO, The panellists shared their perspectives on trends such as predictive analytics, mobile ticketing, secondary market integration, and the future of ticketing technology. Peter Berman, Business Consultant of FutureTix, Inc. moderated the session.

Dean Budnick, co-author of Ticket Masters: The Rise of the Concert Industry and How The Public Got Scalped, which has received critical acclaim from the Wall Street Journal, Rolling Stone, Hollywood Reporter and many other outlets, was the Closing Keynote speaker. Dean lead attendees through the 3-year year journey of writing the book, shared what he discovered along the way, and forecasted future developments in ticketing. A cast of ticketing pioneers figure prominently in the book some of whom are INTIX Lifetime Achievement Award recipients!

Networking is always a highlight of the INTIX conference with opportunities during meals and breaks, in the lounge, and especially at social events. The Reception & Exhibition Opening allowed plenty of time to meet and greet peers and business associates.  During the Rio Rio Cantina Gala Celebration on the River Walk – attendees enjoyed around the world cuisine and room-by-room activities provided by the Gala sponsors. INTIX is grateful for the support of all the sponsors who made generous financial commitments to INTIX and the annual conference.
The exhibition hall was open all 3 days of the conference and was filled with companies representing premiere products and services, showcasing the latest innovations and technological advancements available to the industry. Many thanks to the exhibitors for making the conference such a success!

INTIX is fortunate that industry vendors offer support through sponsoring and exhibiting. It fosters goodwill within the entertainment industry and business opportunities abound when hundreds of influential decision makers gather under one roof. INTIX greatly appreciates their corporate and individual members for their support. In turn, the organisation gives back to the industry by providing scholarships through INTIX’s educational initiative, the Professional Development and Education (PD&E) Fund. Over USD$9,000 in PD&E Funds were awarded to 9 recipients this year, covering the cost of registration, membership, and/or travel expenses associated with attending the conference.

The pinnacle of the conference week is the presentation of the INTIX Awards, created to honour those members who have demonstrated exceptional professionalism and achievement through innovative, informative and creative management. The distinguished 2012 recipients were the Philadelphia Phillies for Outstanding Box Office; Peter Monks from The Ticket Factory for Outstanding Ticketing Professional; Joe Carter from the Los Angeles Philharmonic for Spirit Award; Angus Watson from the Ravinia Festival for the Patricia G. Spira Lifetime Achievement Award; and awarded for the first time Amy Constantine Kline from Manchester Craftsman’s Guild Jazz for Young Professional of the Year.

The Philadelphia Phillies box office has led the way in fan appreciation and retention and maximizing ticket revenues reflected in selling to 104% of capacity for the last three years leading MLB in selling to capacity. Peter Monks has set a standard of excellence by driving a strong foundation of basic ticketing practices, incorporating a cross functional approach to the business and setting a vision to constantly improve and enhance all aspects of the business. Joe Carter has led INTIX through an incredible transition and he’s done it with commitment, optimism and joy. His belief in the purpose of INTIX has allowed the association and its’ members to thrive. Angus Watson has made major contributions to the industry by being at the forefront of technology and customer service. His innovations have set standards and contributed to the bottom line.

Amy Constantine Kline’s dedication to ingenuity, social media expertise and commitment to one-on-one customer service makes her a rising star in entertainment ticketing.
The Board of Directors served breakfast and the latest association news during the annual business meeting, which included the Board installation. The gavel was passed from Brian P. Sayre of PlayhouseSquare to Robert Bennett of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays who is now serving as Board Chair. Brian continues as Past Chair and Mardi Dilger of is Chair-Elect. Serving a first term on the Board is Deborah Ballentine of the Grand Ole Opry Group; Dan DeMato of FutureTix, Inc.; Jason E. Mauser of National Ticket Company; and Adam Rubin of Paciolan.
